The Franklin Academy is the most prestigious magick school in the US, with the highest admission standards, and tuition to match. Any student would be honored to go at all, much less get a scholarship. Not Chance Fortunato. He'd much rather stay at home and study under his mentor, Dr. Corwin. But when a student is attacked and his soul is ripped from his body, Chance knows he has to stay. Not only must he prove his innocence, but he is the only person in the state who has experience fighting the ancient blood magick that is being twisted to a new and terrible purpose. The stakes have never been higher, and Chance has never faced odds like these before. Stripped of his usual network of friends and allies, can he stop the attacks before they strike too close to home? Or will he be the next victim of a dark and terrible sorcery?

I bought all four books together so if you see this same review for each, please forgive! But honestly, this book was a lot of fun to read. Great character to follow, right from the start. Chance Fortunato is simultaneously tough yet fragile, funny but sensitive, determined but still prone to self-doubt. Basically, he's a great portrayal of a teen who is figuring out how to move forward in life, despite some serious trauma. Oh yeah, and don't forget the distracting effects of hormones on a teen boy. How it plays out to serve the storyline, from its impact on his relationships to how it drives his choices is really well done. There might be a little over-reliance on where people fall out on the character spectrum (outsiders/goths = good, elitist conformists = bad), but the mystery-solving and overall narrative makes up for it. From a fantasy perspective, the magic system and how it's brought to life is well done, and shows a great awareness of global traditions. Ultimately, I'd call this a page turner, and I really, really look forward to the next installment.Product details

Charm School The Demon Apprentice Volume 4 Ben Reeder 9781536856958 Books Reviews
This is a great send up of many Harry Potter troupes. Reader takes our favorite wayward warlock to a private boarding school for the magical elite. Many element will be remnicient of Rawling, but they get a fresh spin. Most major characters receive some development, and the dialogue is more crisp. If you haven't met Chance and go. yet, you will get a fair introduction.
This book does pretty much everything right. New characters, expanded plot, action, romance, magic, snark, and killer editing. (The only issue I had was in trying to keep track of all the names.) Proof that Ben Reeder knows how to tell a great story. I can't wait to see what comes next. Highly Recommended.
To read a book and see a character or characters come to life in a readers mind is where the magic is at. To make a character feel real, feel believable; and write a plot where the tension, the danger and the risk, can be felt, is the sign of a good author. To take a plot and make it something new and original, not overdone with cliches or borrowed from other authors, and to keep the reader guessing what comes next is the work of a great author.
While reading this book I smiled and laughed at the humorous or endearing parts and cried more than once as I felt the characters' pain and loss. I felt anger and sorrow, joy and hope, and love for the characters brought to life with all their strengths and weaknesses, imperfections, failures and successes.
This is not a standalone novel. The previous books in the series are just as well written and provide necessary context needed to fully enjoy this book. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading The Demon's Apprentice series and highly recommended it. Ben Reeder is a great author and I look forward to reading more of his books in the future.
Fast, fun read. Keeps things moving forward with new characters and further evolves our buddy Chance. I would like to see
a bit more depth and length to these stories, as this one seemed a bit uneven or rushed at times, but overall the author's formula
works quite well.
Several typos, minor grammatical errors, and misspellings present that knocks off a 1/2 star. e.g. Is it Draden, Dreaden, or Draeden?
I'm glad to proof-read the next one.
This book took a lot longer than his previous works to be published but it was well worth the wait. The main character still grows and shows new sides of himself without losing any of the core aspects that have made us love him. New characters have been introduces in a way that feels normal and gives a chance for the world to grow. Even better old stories have had fresh life injected into them in a way that set s the stage for future fun. I haven't felt like many books recently have deserved a 5 str rating from me but i am happy to give this one a perfect score.
Ben Reader has produced has an amazing imagination to have written this non stop adventure of Chances. The story line is unique, this kid hardly has time to draw a breath before something else rears it's ugly head at him. The books are a roller Coaster of action from start to finish.
I hope this is not the end as it seems chance has a lot more adventures to have. Then his sister is up & coming so the could be working together, I hope as that would be more awsome, not to forget his girlfriend Shade who is a lot of action herself.
I lived these books along with the story Ben has such a gift it draws you into it.
I find the main character (Chance Fortunato) truly amazing. In his life he's had every bad break imaginable (and unimaginable for that matter) and has been exposed to every corrupting influence, but he tries oh-so-hard to do the right thing -- even when it's hard to figure out what the right thing is -- and he usually succeeds. I've never found myself rooting for someone as much as I do for Chance.
Charm School puts very rough-edged Chance in the middle of an upper crust magical boarding school and he ends up in the middle of a gnarly mystery, that, because of his rough background, pretty much only he can solve. I'm not sure that if you analyzed the story under a magnifying glass that the plot would hold together, but it was a very entertaining read -- fast-moving and magical.
